About

Passerelle Centre d’art contemporain is a exhibition venue, production, diffusion and mediation located since 1988 in an exceptional 4000 m2 industrial building in the heart of Brest.
For three seasons a year, French and international artists are invited to produce original works for solo exhibitions or the group show whose the topic brings together territories at all levels, from local to international.

Embodying collaboration and originality, the central Patio becomes an experimental space for all forms of the contemporary creation, sometimes at the margins, from graphics design to dance or music to design. Events, performances, workshops, concerts, lectures, etc., are set up with partners throughout the year.

The Atelier des publics de Passerelle Centre d’art contemporain brings out an initiation and awareness program on contemporary art by offering a variety of mediation activities for all audiences

Passerelle Centre d’art contemporain is supported by the City of Brest, Brest métropole, Finistère Departmental Council, Brittany Regional Council and the Ministry of Culture / DRAC Bretagne.

Passerelle is labeled «Center for Contemporary Art of National Interest».

Passerelle is part of netwoks a.c.b (@artcontemporainbretagne), d.c.a (@dca.reseau) and BLA! (@BLAassociationmediationartcontemporain).

History

The exceptional architectural space of Passerelle was built between 1946 and 1955 on behalf of a cooperative society, L'Alliance des Travailleurs. In 1956, this company merged with La Léonarde, a general food company that had many distribution counters in the Nord-Finistère region. In 1960, the premises in rue Charles Berthelot were sold to a fruit and vegetable wholesaler who set up his warehouse there until June 1972. Many improvements were made at that time, particularly for the preservation of fruit and vegetables. In the following years, the building was rented to various companies specialising in furniture sales, including BUT. On 5 September 1989, the disused warehouse was bought by the young association Passerelle (created in 1988 for this purpose and represented by Serge Tanguy, its founding president) to develop an ambitious artistic project.
